Grace and peace to you my friends,
" One thing have I asked of the LORD,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to inquire in his temple."
Psalm 27:4 ESV
"One thing have I asked". One thing, does that describe your life? Do you exist and live for the one main theme of seeking after the beauty of the Lord? Or perhaps, does your life resemble a jumbled mess of self centered, futile endeavors?
The Psalmist really seems to be indicating that this is a big deal. His one true desire in life is to seek after and enjoy the beauty and presence of the Lord God Almighty. Now you may hear that and think, "There's no way that is even a realistic possibility. Am I really expected to spend all my life, 24-7-365, sitting in a "Temple" meditating on the beauty of God?" My reply to that is obviously, no. To get a better understanding of what seeking after the Lord "all the days of my life" looks like in reality, we can go to the New Testament. In it, we find the Apostle Pual giving us some great guidelines.
"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:17 ESV
"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ." Colossians 3:23-24 ESV
Have you ever really thought about it? Your entire life as a Christ follower is to be about Him. And like He told His disciples, His commands are not burdensome. That means that this kind of life is doable. My friends, we can do this. Yes, we'll stumble and fail, quite frequently I'm sure. But if our all wise Lord God has asked this of us, and He's promised to give us the strength to do it, then by golly, we can do it.
Think of all the different tasks and duties you do throughout the day. All of them can be done in a sinfully self serving way and all of them can be done in a way that honors God and brings glory to His name.
Join with me, won't you, and together let's ask the Lord to help us prioritize and rightly orient our lives like the Psalmist. May the Lord God grant our one request, that all the days of our lives we might seek after and enjoy the beauty and presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
For the Joy of Your Faith and the Beauty of Our Savior,
Teagan
